ABOUT US!

Funky Monkeys is an English owned Children’s Centre established in 2004 and in their third year of premises on the seafront of Mojácar Playa.

Funky Monkeys is staffed by both English and Spanish child carers.
Premises feature a seafront playground, large class room and a separate play room.
Childcare and recreational activities are available to English and Spanish speaking children of all ages, either living in the area or visiting on holiday.

SERVICES

Funky Monkeys offers a childcare service with a Bilingual Pre School from 8am til 6pm, Monday to Friday all year round, featuring both English and Spanish qualified School Teachers.

Bilingual Pre School is for children aged from 1 to 6 years and is open all year. Places are also available to school children during fiesta days and school holidays (Easter, Summer and Christmas). It is a flexible service with 3 hour / 6 hour / 9 hour sessions. Visits are welcome and settling in sessions where a parent can stay are on offer.

Funky Monkeys also operates as an Activity Centre with recreational activities for all ages during the afternoons, evenings, weekends and school holidays. (Kids Cinema, Evening Babysitting Facility, Saturday Morning Kids Club, and Themed Birthday Parties) Holiday programmes with a variety of fun activities and exciting workshops are put on during the school holidays.

THE FUNKY TEAM

The child carers supervising your children at Funky Monkeys have been selected due their experience and understanding of children. They are mature, highly qualified and have had many years experience of working with children since qualifying. Our primary school teachers (Mrs Levine and Señora Ver Navarro) are knowledgeable practitioners in the field of childcare and have qualifications and experience in Early Years Education. Their classes are a fun and interesting variety of songs, stories and education activities.

Supporting our English and Spanish school teachers is Juliet Moffat an English qualified nursery nurse and trained class room assistant. Due to her cheerful personality and gentle nature Juliet is a very popular member of the team and is especially skilled at helping new children settle in. Our current team has worked with each other for the past two years. Parents often comment on our happy team, they appreciate that the good relationship facilitates a pleasant atmosphere helping to create a happy play and learning environment for their children.

Annie Riding the proprietor of Funky Monkeys qualified as a Nursery School Teacher ten years ago, she completed further training to qualify as a Clinical Play Therapist and has more than ten years experience of working with children of all ages in Nurseries, Hospitals and Primary Schools. During her gap year Annie was a Children’s Representative for Thomson Holidays running Kids Clubs in Spain & Greece. Annie completed further studies to become an English Teacher, gaining a Diploma to teach English as a Foreign Language to children (T.E.F.L). Prior to moving to Mojácar Annie worked as a Clinical Play Therapist on a Children’s Ward in a London Hospital for four years and in a primary School for three years. During the summer months Annie is a First Aid Volunteer working at The Red Cross Centre on Mojácar Playa. Annie has lived in Mojácar and provided Childcare Services for the last five years.

BILINGUALISM

Children learning a language are very sensitive to accent and pronunciation, for this reason the children at Funky Monkeys learn Spanish from a native Spanish teacher, as she is from Vera the children will learn to speak Spanish with the local accent so will be better understood when speaking Spanish. The Spanish primary school teacher in addition to general education also teaches classroom Spanish, to the children due to start school, phrases like asking to go to the toilet are taught to help give them some confidence in communicating. English children living in Spain will within a short time of attending Spanish school become fluent, some will pick it up faster than others but, in general after a year, most children will speak at the same level regardless of their Pre School having been predominately English or Spanish.

Many of the studies and advice on bilingualism stress consistency. Children have an enormous capacity for learning, provided opportunities are presented clearly and consistently. The Pre-School routine has been organised to accommodate this approach. Languages are kept separate with carers keeping to usage of their own native language. By utilising this approach Funky Monkeys has established itself within the community as a leading provider of early year’s bilingual learning.

The first half of the Pre-School session consists of activities, songs and stories in English with the English School Teacher. The second half of the Pre-School session consists of activities, songs, and stories in Spanish with the Maestra Infantil de Educación. There is always an English child carer on duty, even during the Spanish session.

Although the children are encouraged to communicate in Spanish during the afternoon session the possibility of also being able to communicate in their own language should they be upset for example, is of reassurance. It is very important for an English child to keep up their English skills, as this will provide a good base for them to learn Spanish, and often parents find that living in Spain affects their child’s standard of English. Therefore, in order to gain maximum bilingual benefits it is recommended that children participate in the full six hour session.

Many families that have recently moved over from the UK have been relieved to be able to use this service and many comment that it is like a stepping stone, by allowing their child exposure to the Spanish language in preparation for school, but with the opportunity to continue with their learning in English.

School is not compulsory in Spain until a child is six years old. Pre School gives the opportunity to overcome early year’s issues such as separation anxiety, sharing, toilet training, following a routine, group integration and social skills before starting full time education.

The English child carers are able to help children to settle in by communicating with them in their own language, at the same time these children will be learning Spanish by playing with Spanish children and during their two hour daily class with the Spanish Teacher. There has always been a high percentage of Spanish children in attendance due to the fact that their parents want them to learn English. Also both English and Spanish speaking parents are able to chat with the child carers in their own language and can find out how their child ’s day was, discuss their child’s progress and voice any concerns they may have.

1st DAY AT SCHOOL!

Parents can come along to Pre School with their child for a visit, this gives them the opportunity to meet the other Teachers and see how happy the children are and how much fun they are having. The visit can be followed by settling in sessions where the parent stays with the child to help ease them into the new environment, as the child gains confidence the parent’s presence can be gradually reduced. There are many different approaches, and it will depend on the child and their situation as to which one the parent feels is suitable.

Parent Information

Bilingual pre school helps to prepare children for school, in terms of language exposure with bilingual activities, but also by aiding their educational and social development, both of which should help provide a smooth transition into school. Parents following this information will help us continue with our high level of service and ensure that their child will enjoy their pre school experience to the full.

If you would like your child to attend Funky Monkeys Bilingual Pre-School please read the following information as your full cooperation is necessary in the following areas:

FOOD & DRINK

Lunch is at 12:00; please bring a snack for your child (biscuit, sandwich, and fruit for example.) Please label all containers with your child's name. A good idea may be to put an icepack in your child’s lunchbox to help keep yoghurts etc cool. A microwave is available if food needs to be warmed. Please also bring a drink container (beaker or bottle) water is provided. If your child has not eaten very well before arrival (breakfast) please make a child carer aware so that a snack may be given.

TOILETING & CLOTHING

Please bring a nappy and a spare change of clothes, wipes are provided. Precious clothing is not advised, please put your child in clothing that is suitable for messy activities and play! Funky Monkeys embroidered t-shirts are available at 10€. During the summer months please apply sun protection prior to arrival and label your child's bottle of sun cream with their name. Please bring a sun hat also labeled with their name, Funky Monkeys embroidered sun hats are available at 4€.

Changing mat, potty, Kandoo wipes, step and toilet training sticker charts are provided. Nappies will be changed between 11:30 and 12:00 also between 15:00 and 15:30 and at any time if the nappy is soiled. Children will be encouraged to use the toilet and wash their hands prior to lunch time.

BEHAVIOUR

As parents you will be more than aware of the type of behavior that you can expect from this age group. Toddlers are becoming more able and, as a result have an intense curiosity to explore, however the language side hasn’t quite caught up and extreme frustration can occur when they want to do something, but do not have the vocabulary as yet to articulate themselves.

Some children may find adjusting to the environment difficult at first, if they have no prior experience of being in a group setting then they will need to learn new social skills, for example sharing and taking turns.
The child carers at Funky Monkeys are experienced to deal with this type of situation and have also been chosen due to their gentle and understanding capabilities when dealing with children.

We will work as a team to provide a consistent approach in our caring. We will never shout at the children or punish them. If a temper tantrum does occur a child will be given supervised space to vent their frustrations then comforted, Carers will try to help them explore their feelings and express themselves.

Similar to temper tantrums frustrated toddlers, as many parents have experienced, do occasionally bite, this is an unlikely situation at Funky Monkeys as carers anticipate such behavior of this age group and children are closely supervised. We will endeavor to prevent this from happening as we want children to feel safe and happy.

If a biting situation does occur it will be dealt with firmly with involvement from parents. If a child bites more than once it may be that they are not yet ready to participate in Pre-School and will have the opportunity of attending again when they are a little older.

Carers will always treat your child kindly and respectfully, it is our aim to bring out the best in your child. We also teach children to be kind and considerate to one another by encouraging good social skills and setting examples.  Children will not be forced to participate but, in order for your child to gain maximum benefit from attending Pre-School they will be firmly encouraged to participate with the Pre-School routine and activities, your support with this and behavioral issues will be much appreciated.

SEPARATION

This can be as emotional for the parent as it is for the child, especially if it is a new experience. Again, a consistent approach is the best way in order to help your child settle. The more drawn out separation is, the more difficult it can be when the parent leaves. Often the longer a parent stays the less the child likes it when they go. If a child remains very upset after being dropped off, parents will be contacted.

In addition to the original visit and subsequent settling in sessions Funky Monkeys also operates an open door policy, meaning that parents are always welcome. After the child has been in attendance for a few weeks many parents chose to join us for a day as it is very interesting for them to observe the progress that has been made.

DISRUPTION

Times for arrival and collection of children are to be kept to the times stated and be made brief. This is to cause as little disruption to the children and the activities as possible. The morning class starts at 10.00, please try to arrive by ten at the latest as we find that if the  children enjoy some outdoor play prior to their class their concentration levels and attention span is better.

PARENT / TEACHER COMMUNICATION

Funky Monkeys operates an open door policy, as parents are always welcome the communication between them and the staff is excellent. Your child, their progress and most of all happiness is highly important to us and we will always have time for you. Parent /teacher meetings are available by appointment if you would like to book some time to discuss your child in private.

ABSENCE

Please do not bring your child if they unwell and contact us by a call or sms to inform us of their absence. If an absence is foreseen (vacation) then please inform us of the dates as soon as possible. We can arrange homework so that your child does not fall behind. Private tuition is available with our School teachers in the afternoon and is an excellent way to help your child catch up with their classmates after a holiday or sickness absence.

• Cause minimal disruption to children and activities by being punctual and keeping arrival and departure as brief as possible.
• Bring a bag containing a nappy, change of clothes, a snack and a drink container.
• Label food and drink containers with your child's name.
• Label items of clothing.
• Please bring your child prepared (fed, watered & rested) so that they can put all their energies into enjoying a fun filled session.
• Dress you child in clothes suitable for Pre-School.
• Do not bring your child if they are unwell.
• Please try to avoid bringing in toys from home as they may get lost or broken and could even be unsuitable for some of our younger children.
• Please make Child Carers aware if your child is toilet training.
• Full time monthly fees are paid from the child's first day and then every month on that date. Days of absence during the month will be returned at the end of the month so for example if fees are the 1st of the month to the 1st of the next month, and three days have been missed fees will be due on the 3rd rather than the 1st.
• Payment for a full session is to be made at the start of the morning session.
• Payment for a morning session is to be made at the end of the morning session.
• If a child booked in for a morning session is collected after three hours they will be charged at full session price.

Si su hijo acude al centro infantil Funky Monkeys cinco días a la semana durante un mínimo de tres horas diarias, adquirirá un alto nivel de inglés en seis meses.

Si después de un año con nosotros su hijo no hablara inglés, le ofreceríamos un año gratis de clases de inglés*

Las clases de inglés se llevan a cabo todos los lunes por la tarde en el Funky Monkeys. Las clases son impartidas por profesor nativo de inglés muy cualificado.

El centro infantil Funky Monkeys es propiedad de una profesora de colegio inglesa.

Las sesiones son muy divertidas. Además de las propias actividades educativas, se leen cuentos y los niños pintan, cantan, bailan, y juegan tanto en el interior como en el exterior.

Disponemos de una zona de juego en el paseo marítimo con columpios, tobogán y bicicletas.

Contamos con tres profesores de inglés nativos, incluyendo una profesora con titulación específica para la enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera (T.E.F.L).
Contamos asimismo con la colaboración de una maestra infantil española durante dos horas cada día.

Utilizamos los mismos libros de trabajos y material de enseñanza que en los colegios españoles y del Reino Unido.

Las madres se pueden quedar todo el tiempo que quieran cada vez que así lo deseen.

A partir de enero abriremos de 08:00 – 18:00 y dispondremos de plazas para niños a partir de un año de edad.

Venga a pasar un día con nosotros y podrá ver lo que hacemos.

Asimismo contamos con plazas para niños hasta los 7 años durante las vacaciones escolares (Semana Santa, verano, navidad, y días festivos). Reserve ahora su plaza para SEMANA SANTA y VERANO y se beneficiará de un gran descuento.

Reading and writing activities. Storytelling and Library.

Storytelling Sessions
Children are invited to story time sessions, where they will be able to enjoy a selection of old and new favourites read by a Qualified English Teacher (T.E.F.L) Diploma. Sessions include reading and writing activities and games.

Library

Over 500 children's books to choose from!!

To become a member please fill out a Library registration form and make a payment of 20 euros. A returnable deposit of 20 euros is required, this will be refunded providing all books borrowed are returned and have not been damaged. Membership can be put in the family name so that brothers and sisters may also use the facility. Up to 5 books per membership may be borrowed per week.

Membership is for 6 months, when membership expires either choose to renew for another 6 months or have the deposit refunded.

If requested, membership may be terminated at any time before the 6 month expiry date and the deposit returned. This may be an option if families decide to relocate, for example.

Please visit during library opening hours (Wednesdays 18:00 till 19:30) in order to join, browse, borrow and return books.

Brand new English Children's books can be ordered from the UK through an Usborne Books Organiser.

Weekly Dance Classes. Classes for boys and girls with Jay (I.S.T.D) qualified Dance Teacher (ex backing dancer (Robbie Williams – Rock Dj) choreographer (Girls Aloud))

Jay is a qualified Dance Teacher with many years experience as a choreographer and teacher of dance. He is a father of a 2 year old son and owner of Rancho Luz del Sol (horse riding stables). Jay will be giving weekly dance classes teaching boy band and girl band dance routines in addition to choreographing upcoming stage productions.

Annie, owner of Funky Monkeys is a professional face painter and make up artist with experience in local theatre productions and charity events. Annie will be in charge of hair, make up and wardrobe in upcoming stage productions.

Themed Parties for Kids at Funky Monkeys Activity Centre

All parties are held on Saturday afternoons, last 3 hours and include use of the Activity Centre, organisation & supervision, snacks & drinks, decorations & music, also all materials (cosmetics, jewellery etc)

Makeover Party
Enjoy a manicure, pedicure, facial & makeover while sipping champagne and nibbling canapés!

Beauty Parties are held on Saturday afternoons, last 3 hours and include the following:

• Party ware / decorations / music - you choose the colour, theme, music etc.
• Champagne & Canapés (Childrens Champagne, Schloer Soft Drink, Cadbury Chocolate Fingers, Twiglets etc) presented on silver platters with imitation glass champagne flutes.
• Beautifying creams, lotions & potions! As well as hair, nail & cosmetic products.

A separate room in the Activity Centre is used for the party and can be decorated as desired. Arrange a meeting with Annie prior to the party to discuss your requirements.

Jewellery Party
Invite your guests & get creative! Use Floam, Fimo and a huge assortment of beautiful beads to design your own fabulous jewellery!

Jewellery Parties are held on Saturday afternoons, last 3 hours and include the following:

• Party Ware / Decorations / Music - you choose the colour, theme, music etc.
• Drinks & nibbles. Soft drink of choice, savoury & sweet snacks (crisps, chocolate) etc
• All craft & jewellery materials (modelling materials, beads, metal clasps, key rings, & earrings) etc
• Craft activity - make a jewellery box to take home all your fantastic creations!

Pop Star Party
Have a funky makeover with your mates (hair colour, make up etc), practise your tunes & moves then perform your dazzling show with karaoke machine, microphone, lights, smoke machine etc.

• A recording will be filmed and each pop star will be given a copy on disk.
• Includes drinks & snacks, decorations, makeover, music equipment, recording & disk per child.

Parties need to be booked plenty of time in advance.
The themed parties are not suitable for children under the age of 5.

Price: Each themed party costs a fee of 50 euros then 10 euros per child.
(A non returnable deposit of 20 euros is required.)
